Michigan will change both name and sex, and will issue a new birth certificate rather than amend the old one. Michigan law also provides for “sealing” of the old record. You will need an original letter from your SRS surgeon, and an original or certified copy of the court order for your name change. The fee is $26.00.
Updated information (2005) regarding Michigan driver licenses and state identification cards:
Effective April 1, 2005, Michigan will change “gender marker” without requiring evidence of SRS. Under the new policy, individuals need to bring a letter from their therapist, stating the reason for the gender marker change, in order to trade their old license in for a new one. (Note: this does not apply to the birth certificate).
A request that a new certificate be established to show a sex designation other than that designated at birth. The request shall be accompanied by an affidavit of a physician certifying that sex-reassignment surgery has been performed.
