Alison has moved around the country since her birth in New Jersey. She lived in the Bay area during the 60s and moved to the Pacific Northwest - initially to live on a commune. In Seattle, she became active in the free clinic movement - working as the social services director of Open Door Clinic. She moved into Community Mental health and worked as a counselor and instructor in a variety of mental health and community college settings. She was also a parent, union organizer, activist, hippie, student, and volunteer board member in Seattle. Alison left mental health to begin transition. She decided to try her hand in technology and maybe make money. She learned a bit about computers but did not make money. She became a manager of technical support engineers who support well-known operating systems.
Alison moved to Tucson from Seattle during the summer heat of 2001. (Her techie job offered her a choice between Tucson, AZ and Orem, UT). She was somewhere in the midst of her transition when this move occurred. Tucson was clearly the right choice for continuing this journey. She found TGNet Arizona right away, which led her to Wingspan and SAGA. She became a volunteer for Wingspan in September of 2001. She found a home with SAGA and began attending regular meetings and Dezert Girlz. Alison was invited to join the board in January of 2002. A few months later, this former counselor agreed to facilitate the Dezert Girlz support group. Alison transitioned at work in 2002. She has gone back into social service work after watching tech jobs move offshore. She now works at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation and is very out and active in a variety of community groups.
