TUCSON ORGANIZATIONS DENOUNCE LATEST ATTACK BY TRUMP ADMINISTRATION

TUCSON ORGANIZATIONS DENOUNCE LATEST ATTACK BY TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AGAINST TRANS PEOPLE

Tucson, Arizona, October 25, 2018 – The Trump administration is launching a new attack on transgender and gender nonconforming/non-binary people aimed at excluding them from the protection of federal civil rights laws. According to a report from the New York Times, federal agencies are attempting to erase transgender and gender nonconforming/non-binary people by issuing regulations that narrowly redefine “sex” in civil rights law as determined at birth and unchangeable.

This move fails to recognize scientific evidence that gender is not determined by a person’s biological sex assigned at birth, and legal precedent from dozens of courts that have fully affirmed the rights and identities of transgender and gender nonconforming/non-binary people. “Trans people, including gender nonconforming and non-binary people, just want to live their lives with the same rights and protections as anyone else,” said Erin Russ, Director of Programming for the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance.

In response to this attack, the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, Mariposas sin Fronteras and la Coalicion de Derechos Humanos are calling for a rally on Monday, October 29th from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the US District Court (405 W. Congress).

We will resist hateful policies.

We will continue to fight for the rights of transgender and gender nonconforming/non-binary people.

Transgender rights are human rights!
